Zelkova (from Georgian dzelkva, 'stone pillar') is a genus of six species of deciduous trees in the elm family Ulmaceae, native to southern Europe, and southwest and eastern Asia. They vary in size from shrubs (Z. sicula) to large trees up to 35 m (115 ft) tall (Z. carpinifolia). The bark is smooth, dark brown. Unlike the elms, the branchlets are never corky or winged. The leaves are alternate, with serrated margins, and (unlike the related elms) a symmetrical base to the leaf blade. The leaves are in two distinct rows; they have pinnate venation and each vein extends to the leaf margin, where it terminates in a tooth. There are two stipules at each node, though these are caducous (shed early), leaving a pair of scars at the leaf base. Zelkova is polygamous. Staminate flowers are clustered in the lower leaf axils of young branchlets; the perianth is campanulate, with four to six (to seven) lobes, and the stamens are short. Pistillate and hermaphrodite flowers are solitary, or rarely in clusters of two to four, in the upper leaf axils of young branchlets. The fruit is a dry, nut-like drupe with a dorsal keel, produced singly in the leaf axils. The perianth and stigma are persistent.

The name Zelkova derives from the native name of Z. carpinifolia in the Georgian language - one of the Kartvelian languages spoken in the Caucasus, as shown by the Georgian name, dzelkva, from dzeli meaning 'bar' or 'pillar', and kva meaning 'rock', 'stone' The tree was often used for making rock-hard and durable bars for building and furniture.

We, Zelkova, learns beautiful Osamari from Japanese traditional technology, and create new value with thinking outside the box.
Osamari-to put materials together and finish work beautifully, finding out the material properties such as wood, stones, and soil, etc.
Those buildings can be easily managed, maintained, and they are sustainable.
Unfettered thought comes from using hand tools (carpenters) or drawing blueprints (architects).
With the well handled ideas and the use of basic tools and precision machines or CAD in combination,
we can create a space that is necessary now.

渡邉史康(ワタナベ フミヤス)・1981年長野県松本市に生まれる。大工棟梁の三男で自宅兼加工場という環境の中、幼い頃から大工職人たちの仕事ぶりを目の当たりにし、木と大工道具で遊んでいた。
中、高学生時代にスケートボード、グラフィティに魅せられ、それらから音楽、服、映像、デザインと芸術に興味を持つ。
高校卒業後、英国へ美術を学びに留学し、帰国後は多摩美術大学造形表現にて更に空間デザインを学んだ。00年代前半にロンドンを中心にヨーロッパ諸国を旅し00年後半にサンフランシスコやオーストラリアなどを旅する。この海外旅行の中で常に建物を見ることや美術館を回ることは大きな財産となる、また各地の人との交流から文化を学ぶ。
09年地元松本市に戻る。3代目大澤建築店棟梁大澤伸章の誘いがあり、新築物件を一から作り上げたことをきっかけに設計を始める。
棟梁がする仕事や数寄屋建築からの影響で木造建築に感銘を受ける。英国留学において世界の建築物をみて、日本の木造空間の美しさを再認識した経験を持つ。また美大で学んだ同期の仲間から最新の多種多様なデザイン情報が得られる環境を有している。
渡邉は、11年間、棟梁の下で大工技術を学び、木材を選び墨付けをし、現場施工をしながら現場を管理。自身で設計したものを施工管理して完成させる。この繰り返しの中に伝統技術を学び、現代の道具で伝統技術をさらに発展させていくこと目指すようになる。

Fumiyasu Watanabe Born in Nagano, Matsumoto,1981.
As his father was a carpenter, he enjoyed playing with wood and tools in a perfect environment that has a professional workplace,
During his junior high, and high school days, Fumiyasu was attracted by graphics.
Later he started to have curiosity in arts music, clothes, videos and design.
Graduating a high school, he flew to Britain to learn fine art, then continued studying space design at Tama Art University after coming back to Japan.
In 2000’s, he traveled around Europe, the U.S., and Australia, then touched different art.
He learned various culture and got great assets through visiting museums or everywhere, and also communicating with local people in a lot of cities.
Back to his home ground Matsumoto in 2009.
Thanks to his old brother’s idea, which was to build a house, he started to work as an architect.
As he realized again the beautifulness of Japanese wooden architecture while he saw the world’s buildings, he was strongly impressed by the traditional sukiya works.
After that he got carpenter skills in 11 years experience, and now he has responsibility in all the construction from the choices of wood to sumituke, drawing blueprints, and management.
Keeping learning traditional skills in those processes, he’s now aiming to develop the skills with contemporary tools.

大澤伸章(オオサワ ノブアキ)・数寄屋大工「中村外二工務店」で9年修行し、大澤建築店3代目として事業継承したあとも研鑽を続ける大工
代表は丁稚奉公5年、職人4年。諸先輩方の仕事を肌で感じ学んだことが、とても重要な経験となっており、30年たった今でもともに育った兄弟弟子の仕事を見て多くの刺激を受けている。建築は一人ではできず、多くの職人の仕事があってこそ良いものができるという信念を持ち、より良い仕事ができるよう、日々技術の向上と後進への指導にあたる。

Trained at Sukiya carpenter ‘Nakamura Sotoji building’ for 9 years, Osawa took over Osawa Building from his father as the third generation president, and has been devoting himself to his studies.
It is great experience for him to have learned how to work from all the seniors, and also he’s been inspired by his colleagues (used to be trainees who worked with him before) for 30 years.
His policy is ‘it’s impossible to build alone, so only when a lot of builders’ skill got together, the best one can be built.’
To make his work better, he has developed his skill day by day and has been training the juniors.
